Lifeboat, davit and winch service
Annual thorough examination and operational testing of lifeboats, rescue boats and freefall boats, their davits, winches and on-load release gear, by service personnel authorised under Resolution MSC.402(96).

The obligation
Why it is required
SOLAS Chapter III Regulation 20 and Resolution MSC.402(96), Requirements for maintenance, thorough examination, operational testing, overhaul and repair of lifeboats and rescue boats, launching appliances and release gear, make the annual thorough examination and the five-yearly overhaul mandatory, and require that the work is done by an authorised service provider whose personnel are certified for the make and type of equipment. Since 1 January 2020 flag states and port state control check the service provider's authorisation as well as the certificate.

IMO Resolution MSC.402(96) allows this work only where the service provider is authorised by the flag Administration and the personnel are certified for the make and type of equipment. Our authorisation and our technicians' certification cover the makes listed below. Where a flag Administration sets requirements beyond MSC.402(96), we work to the stricter of the two and say so on the certificate.

Frequently asked
Who is allowed to do the annual lifeboat and davit examination?
Only an authorised service provider with personnel certified for the make and type of equipment, per MSC.402(96). OZ Maritime holds these authorisations and issues the statement of acceptance.
Is the five-yearly overhaul a separate visit?
No. We combine the five-yearly overhaul and dynamic load test with the annual examination so the vessel loses no extra time in port.
What if the davit maker no longer exists?
We apply for a single-time authorisation from the flag administration on your behalf and carry out the examination under it.
Do you service freefall lifeboats?
Yes, including the release system, the davit and winch for retrieval, and the simulated launch test.
